What is Immigration Law?

Immigration Lawyers help people from foreign countries enter Canada for many different reasons. Citizens from many countries require a visa to enter Canada to visit with family, friends, or simply to sightsee. Others wish to come to Canada to study and plan to return to their country of origin armed with a highly valued degree or diploma from a Canadian college or university. Others plan to remain in Canada after their education is complete to work and eventually acquire permanent residency and, later citizenship if they meet the Canadian governments requirements.

Still others wish to come to Canada to work temporarily to support family members they have left behind. Some people prefer to seek permanent residency right from the get-go and if they have the qualifications, an Immigration Lawyer can help them achieve that goal.

Immigration Lawyers also often work with Canadian employers who cannot hire enough people from within to Canada to meet their needs. In that case, the lawyer may assist them to find qualified workers overseas and obtain the permits necessary for those people to come and work for the company.

Whatever the situation, if you are a lawful resident of Canada and wish to sponsor a friend or family member to visit, an employer in desperate needs of staff, a foreign national who wants to work or study in Canada, or someone who wants to live in Canada permanently and to bring your family members here after you are settled, Immigration Laws and procedures are complex and they change frequently as the Canadian government responds to economic and social changes.

When Do I Need a Lawyer?

It is next to impossible for the average person to navigate Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s many diverse visa programs. The assistance of an Immigration Lawyer is necessary.

We note that there are individuals who are not lawyers but who represent themselves as immigration consultants. Some of these individuals are perfectly legitimate but they do not have the training or experience navigating confusing, even conflicting, programs and regulations that a lawyer has. Worse, however, is that many are not legitimate and will charge large fees and fail to deliver results, sometimes making no effort at all. For these reasons, the curators of this Directory strongly urge individuals with an Immigration need or issue to use the services of an Immigration Lawyer.
