What is Construction Law?
The services of Construction Lawyers are most often called upon in connection with large projects like hospitals, arenas or other large public venues, major road or bridge construction projects, airports, hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, and other commercial buildings such as factories and distribution centres. Their jobs include negotiating and writing up contracts with architects, project managers, construction contractors and subcontractors (each of which typically specializes in a particular part of the construction), and companies that supply materials and heavy equipment.
Construction Lawyers will also be involved in negotiating and documenting the various agreements covering the financing of large construction projects. Much of that work is very technical.
When Do I Need a Lawyer?
For most people, the only time they will need to consult with a Construction Lawyer is if they ran into a problem with a contractor they hired to do home renovations or improvements or build an addition to their home or cottage. A contractor might abandon a project before completing all the work it was paid for and agreed to do or may do the job in a way that is not satisfactory and not to the standard agreed. It might also be the case that a homeowner has concerns that a contractor’s work does not meet the requirements of the building code. If any of those situations describe a predicament you are in and you cannot resolve the matter with the contractor, or if a contractor declares bankruptcy in the middle of your project, you will need to speak with a Construction Lawyer as soon as you can.
